Chainsaw Man Season 1 Review

Chainsaw Man Season 1 Review

The first season of Chainsaw Man anime has reached its conclusion, and it is one of the most action-packed finales of all time. There is a lot of confusion, action, and plot points to unpack for the viewers. While manga readers will take it all in without batting an eye, anime viewers might miss out on key details. But worry not because we have you covered.ย

The final episode of Chainsaw Manโ€™s first season opens with the ghost devil holding Aki by the neck while he remembers Himeno. Then, it drops Aki down, hands him a cigarette, and for unknown reasons, allows him to kill it. At the same time, Kobeni sneaks behind Akane, the woman who controls the snake devil, and puts a knife to her neck.

As Power busies herself dealing with the zombies infiltrating the enemyโ€™s hideout, Denji arrives at the floor where Katana Man lurks. Their initial encounter presents Katana Man in his human form, but a brief exchange triggers his transformation into a fearsome hybrid. Without hesitation, the two devil hybrids leap out of a window, engaging in a fierce battle amidst the rooftops of nearby buildings.

As the showdown intensifies, they eventually find themselves atop a speeding train, striving to grasp one anotherโ€™s viewpoints. However, Denjiโ€™s willingness to entertain Katana Manโ€™s thoughts proves fleeting, and their conversation quickly gives way to continued combat.

Inside the trainโ€™s confines, the lives of the passengers hang in the balance as Katana Man gains the upper hand, overwhelming Chainsaw Man and severing both of his arms while he valiantly shields the innocent travelers. It appears that all hope is lost, but Denji, undeterred, summons the last of his strength and continues the fight, relying solely on the chainsaw embedded in his head. However, even this makeshift weapon shatters under the relentless assault.

Just when it seems like Chainsaw Manโ€™s demise is inevitable, a surprising turn of events unfolds. Denji summons a chainsaw from his leg and cleaves Katana Man in two, seemingly marking his victory in the climactic battle between Katana Man and Chainsaw Man in the season finale.

Katana Man, a hybrid, lives and transforms back into a human. However, Denji quickly restrains him while he is unconscious. Soon after arriving, Aki makes a call for assistance. After that, the two alternately kick Katana Manโ€™s human form in the crotch to maintain the animeโ€™s dark humor. Although he is still alive, Katana Man will most likely appear again after the Chainsaw Man season 1 conclusion.

Akane, however, is the antagonist who wonโ€™t appear in subsequent seasons. In the final moments of the episode, we find out that she used the snake devilโ€™s assistance to commit herself as a result of her agreement with the Gun devil, one of Chainsaw Manโ€™s most formidable demons.

Who Is The Girl Shown in Chainsaw Man Finale Ending?

Who Is The Girl Shown in Chainsaw Man Finale Ending?

The girl we meet in the after credits of the Chainsaw Man season 1โ€™s finale is none of than Reze (aka the Bomb devil hybrid). In the manga, she first acts as Denjiโ€™s new love interest but soon reveals herย sinister plan to literally steal Chainsaw Manโ€™s heart. From the looks of it, the anime is following in the same footsteps and the next season will open with a knock by Reze.

Expanding on Rezeโ€™s character, she is a hybrid formed from the Bomb devil, similar to Katana Man and Chainsaw Man. In this hybrid state, a human can voluntarily harness the abilities of a contracted devil while maintaining their own consciousness. Reze serves as an agent for the Soviet Union, with her primary objective being the capture of Pochita.

In her devil form, Rezeโ€™s head takes on the appearance of an atomic bomb, and her powers enable her to generate explosions, including the ability to detonate herself. Being a hybrid, such a self-explosion is not fatal for her, but it proves devastating for her adversaries.

This projected 2024 release date stems from online discussions and theories. Itโ€™s based on the fact that MAPPA, the studio behind the first season of Chainsaw Man, has completed work on Vinland Saga Season 2 and the final episodes of Attack on Titan: The Final Season. This has led to the belief that MAPPA might be working on Chainsaw Man Season 2 and could potentially announce updates about the second season towards the end of 2023 or the beginning of 2024.

In fact, given Studio MAPPAโ€™s incredible output in recent years for the Chainsaw Man Season 2 will airing this November.

Chainsaw Man season 2 plot

Chainsaw Man season 2 plot

Recapping season oneโ€™s plot, as summarized by Crunchyroll:

โ€œDenji is a teenage boy coexisting with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita. Heโ€™s been living a destitute life, burdened by his fatherโ€™s debt, and making ends meet by hunting devil corpses alongside Pochita. However, Denjiโ€™s life takes a dramatic turn when he is betrayed and killed. As he teeters on the brink of death, he forges a contract with Pochita, leading to his revival as โ€˜Chainsaw Manโ€™ โ€“ a being with a devilโ€™s heart.โ€

The first season predominantly revolved around Denjiโ€™s journey as he embraced the role of a devil hunter. Fortunately, he had the support of his comrades, including Power, Kobeni, Himeno, and Aki, as they confronted formidable adversaries like the Ghost Devil, Bat Devil, and Katana Man.

With this recap in mind, whatโ€™s on the horizon for Chainsaw Man in season two?

The conclusion of Chainsaw Manโ€™s first season saw Denji and his team drawing closer to their ultimate goal of locating the elusive Gun Devil, following their triumph over Katana Man and the Snake Devil.

If youโ€™re too impatient to wait for new episodes, read Tatsuki Fujimotoโ€™s manga to find out whatโ€™s coming our way next on screen.

โ€œIf they follow it as faithfully as they do, Iโ€™m so so so excited for a lot of the other devils and fiends to get their time to shine because the show gets so much more weird and fun and strange and sad. Thereโ€™s a lot,โ€ said Colt.
